Experimental Typography
University Project

This assignment questioned the terms legibility and readabilty with the help of texts by Austrian author Marlen Haushofer. It displays all designs in an heptagonal shape, a rescue boat, as a hint to one of the themes of her most important work: Die Wand. For stabilty, the middle part features a double mirror with one printed side. The reflection is also supposed to be seen as an opportunity to reflect about oneself; oneself being another theme in Die Wand.

→ Folded Object, 145–190×150–230mm, 7 pages
→ Supervised by Ulrike Pötschke
→ Printed at New Design University

A Face – Selected Short Film, Vienna 2019
University Project

“A Face” was developed as part of an imaginary toolkit. It actually is a response to humanities oblivion of the biggest tool of all: our face. The inability to consciously notice the own face and its capabilities – deliberately moving our mouth when we talk, widening our nares when we breathe in – is where this short movie tries to set in.

→ 1920×1080, 24fps, 1:09min
→ Displayed at a Local Cinema (Urania Kino)

Google
Internship Application Project

“Design a digital billboard experience to welcome incoming students and their families. These will be displayed on various screens on campus, and will show orientation information, advertise student organizations and events, and include delightful moments of school branding. Create three motion sequences that will be looped, transitioning between the different types of content.”

I tried to keep the academy’s branding and recognizability in mind while designing, which is also why the university’s logo and the logo of its parent organization Artesis Plantijn Hogeschool Antwerpen are shown almost constantly. Regardless of which campus the spectator is at and if the viewer has been to another campus or not, they should feel like the billboard experience is part of the academy, part of the whole.

It is worth mentioning that some movements, particularly with larger text, have been sped up for the purpose of making it more interesting to see online; text would, of course, be visible for a longer period of time in a real life.

Wright
Type Design

Wright is a revival of Edward Wright’s “Alphabet for a study in Legibility, 1963”. Edward Wright was a British typographer and graphic designer, best known for the numbering system on New Scotland Yard’s rotating sign.

Upon researching a quirky capital “R” seen on the cover of REAL REVIEW issue 8 by OKRM London, a digital version of Wright’s alphabet came to life. It has an additional bold weight and covers only A–Z, 0–9.
